HER2 Negative?

I just got my pathology results and thought I was Her 2 Positive, but am Her 2 negative plus oestrogen and progesterone receptor positive.

I have extensive involvement in both breasts by invasive breast carcinoma of no special type but . Stage 3 in left and stage 2 in right and positive for cancer in left lymph nodes. Both breasts have multiple different features but mainly ductal carcinoma with central necrosis and tubular and cribriform structures.

I am going for a bilateral mastectomy and lymph dissection on the 16th but what follows that? I just had a chat with my surgeon and asked her to try to get my breasts as flat as she can without dog ears but she tried to say bits of fatty lumps was normal and I can get the dog ears corrected later. Wouldn't it be better to do the job properly at the start?

What comes next with Her2 negative. I have been told chemo, radiotherapy and hormone suppressing therapy but it appears chemo does not work that well which is why surgery came first.

Has anyone else had experience with this?

  • Hi Managngit,

It's good to see that you don't have too much longer to wait for your double mastectomy. Are you going to have reconstruction at the same time? I am sure that you are desperate to know what follows next. This will depend upon what your results are after surgery. The  breast tissue that is removed will be sent to Pathology for testing. It can take anything from 1-3 weeks to get the results back from this.

When your results are returned to the hospital, the consultant will discuss your findings at their regular MDT (multi-disciplinary team) meeting and between them, they will decide upon the best treatment for you. Most people with this, will be treated with chemo, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, but this may sometimes change, when the results come through. There is a test, which can determine how effective chemo will be for you and this will help you to decide if will be of any use to you.

It is good news that you are HER2 negative, as this means that your cancer will respond to hormone therapy as well.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and had a double mastectomy for the second. One piece of advice I can give you, is to look out nightwear and daywear, that buttons down the front. This makes it easier for examinations in hospital. It also helps with day time wear, as you may find it dificult to take clothes over your head to start with.

  • Thank you Jolamine. Will hunt:laugh: up some nighties today. Glad you mentioned that as i tried to find something ummmm... nice or acceptable for public display at least. You can tell by my night attire that I live alone :)

and no, I am not having reconstruction as happy to have bare, hopefully cancer-free chest.

  • Hi Managingit,

I didn't have reconstruction either and I have managed well with a selection of prostheses for different activities.

I shall be thinking of you on 16th and hope that all goes well.

Please let us know how you get on and remember that we are always here for you.
