New diagnosis of DCIS - what can I expect?

Hi all,

Just been diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma of the left breast in two areas, doctor requested MRI to gather more information on size and to check for anything else.  MRI results came back with just the two areas, 13mm and 8mm, 4cm apart but showing cluster of calcifications so having wide local excision 23rd May to remove with the calcifications and sentinel node, any information regarding recovery, what to expect would be a help or similar stories.

Thanks Lou

  • Hiya, thanks for the message, surgery went well, removed both areas of ductal carcinoma and two lymph nodes so waiting game now for biopsy results to find out the next course of treatment.  Feeling pretty good so far just a bit bruised and swollen.  I'm assuming the further testing they've been doing with you is to make sure there's nothing they've missed.  I had an mri after my initial biopsy which showed up an area of clustered calcifications which they have now removed to look at, originally I was told I had two areas of dcis, and yet at the last appointment I had before surgery,  they said I have invasive ductal carcinoma and that's why they are checking the sentinel lymph node.  So I should find out for definite at the next appointment what exactly they took out and what further treatment I need.

    When's your next appointment?

  • Hi Lou, hi User432, Lou - glad to hear your surgery went well. My diagnosis yo-yoed between invasive and in-situ also and mid/high grade. Ended up high-grade DICS after about four weeks with pathology but I'm having five sessions of radiotherapy because of my age (50).

User432. - I've found the consultants very thorough with the tests and hopefully you will get a definite plan soon. I too float along and just take the recommendations of the team. Always forget to ask questions but it hasn't done me any harm !!

Best wishes both during the waiting - it's not easy on the nerves xx

  • Thanks for the message and the tip for front opening bra, I bought two and they've been so supportive and easy to put on.  Get my wounds checked on the 31st May and still waiting for the biopsy results appointment to come through.  The waiting is the worst of all of it, but at least I'll know for sure what we're dealing with, just fingers crossed there's no lymph nodes affected.

Have you got your radiotherapy dates yet?

    Best wishes Lou x

  • V welcome Lou. I start radiotherapy on Wednesday so my appointments will be broken up by a weekend. Yes, the waiting is the worst. I hope you get a good outcome xx

  • Thanks, I'll keep you updated, hope the radiotherapy goes ok,  been told it'll make you pretty tired, take it easy xx

  • Hi, glad to hear you've had your surgery now and it went well.  I had similar surgery (but bilateral) 16th May, feel ok apart from some swelling around the sentinel node biopsy area on one side (seroma?).  It's good that they are checking your wounds, our hospital just leaves you to it!  The appointment with the consultant to get results isn't until 6 weeks after the surgery.  Lots of waiting, as you say!

For anyone else approaching surgery, I would say to get an extra pair of compression socks as the ones you come home in you'll want to wash frequently during the 2 weeks you need to keep them on for!

Good luck with your recovery and results.

  • Glad to hear surgery went well and you're recovering fairly fine. Hopefully you pathology gets back to you soon with the news of clear lymph nodes!

I've had my appointment, mastectomy towards the end of the month and they found a tiny bit of invasive but nothing drastic enough to account for tougher treatment thankfully!

  • Thanks, had my dressings checked today and all healing well, appointment through for my results Thursday 8th June 5.30pm, can't come quick enough

  • Hi all, had biopsy appointment yesterday, pathology found a total of three tumours, two grade 1 IDC and one grade 2 IDC, of the two sentinel nodes, one was positive.  Awaiting radiotherapy appointment now and been prescribed tamoxifen for 5 yrs. Feeling relieved but also still worried, could it of spread further? Hope you're all doing well.

    Lou x

  • Hi Lou, aw I'm glad to hear you're relieved! Maybe it would be worthwhile telling your consultant concerns of it spreading? I've found phoning macmillan for a chat to be extremely helpful, they can definitely chat through your concerns with you and point you in a direction.

    All the best x
