Womb thickness 5.6mm and worried

Hi All,

Has anyone had cancer diagnosis with womb thickness at 5.6mm? Waiting for hysteroscopy and very worried. Had rusty discharge for 4 days post menopausal which what started the referral by my GP.

Any feedback most gratefully received.

  • Hello WP01 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so worried at the moment about this womb thickness of 5.6mm. The hysteroscopy will hopefully shed some light on what is causing this womb thickness and discharge. It's good that the GP is being thorough and doing all the necessary tests.

There is information on our website on the hysteroscopy which I hope you will find useful. It's normal to be worried as you are waiting for your appointment and then it will be another couple of weeks to have to wait for results, a time that many find incredibly stressful. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that other members of our community who have had a similar experience will be along shortly to share their story with you.

Everything crossed for you that it all goes well with the hysteroscopy and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I hope you've had your hysteroscopy now and that all is well. I too am awaiting biopsies and a hysteroscopy - after 2 years of no periods (I'm 55) I suddenly had a bleed/gunky rusty stuff. I've had a transvaginal US where the only abnormalty reported was a thickened endometrium of 5.9mm. Neither myself, the gynae medics or my GP are unduly concerned, but the >5mm endometrium lining warrants further investigation. They very much emphasised that this is to rule out a malignancy, not to diagnose one. I'm on HRT so am thinking I'm maybe a little low on Progesterone.

  • Hi Bunny,

Thank you very much for your reply, I have not had my hysteroscopy yet as I requested to have it under GA, not sure why they do not offer the option for sedation from the onset. Well I know why, as I spoke to a consultant aneastatist who said it is because female helathcare leaves a lot to be desired.

So had to go to the appointment in order to request the GA. Then another date was set up with longer wait due to doctor's strikes. Going for pre-op next week.  For better or worse this is was my decision. At least the doctor said that like you, I only had the 5.6mm thickness show up and that the 5mm cut off point is set on general population stats, but it is best it get things checked. I am not on HRT but I have hypothyroidism, which has played havoc with my hormons before. Hope all will be OK in the end. Have calmed down a bit as I went in to a paniced frenzy at the time a wrote my first message. Do let me know how you get on. I am sure all will be well and wish you lots of good luck.

  • Hi, just been reading your post as I was told on Tuesday that my womb is slightly thicker than normal and requires further investigation. Please can I ask if you have had your hysteroscopy and results of biopsy. Just trying to prepare myself mentally for what lies ahead. Many thanks.
