Newly diagnosed with low grade lymphoma

Hi, I was diagnosed a week ago with low grade lymphoma. Just had CT scan. Blood test of CRP level 56 which is much higher than 4 weeks ago.  I have a great deal of pain in arms and legs. Is this normal? GP says leave it to hematology to sort pain management as I have inflammatory bowel disease and cannot take codeine based meds. Doesn't seem like much to look forward to.

  • Hello tonyjo210245 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am so sorry to hear about your low grade lymphoma diagnosis. I hope that haematology will sort out the pain management side of things for you - do make sure you mention to them that you have inflammatory bowel disease and cannot take codeine based tablets. They will have a lot of experience I am sure in finding the right pain relief in all sorts of different circumstances and for people with all kinds of other conditions so try not to worry too much at this stage. I hope that they will be able to sort out this pain in your arms and legs.

You've only just had the diagnosis so it's a lot to have to take in - hopefully you will hear from other forum members who have had the same diagnosis before and they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited the title of your thread to make it more specific and mention 'low grade lymphoma' so that it can be more easily spotted by others who have been diagnosed with the same type of lymphoma before.

If there is anything you would like to discuss, our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you find out more soon about what your treatment options will be and that it all goes well for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. I'm very confused with my recent diagnosis.  I am 78 years old and enjoy going to the pub for a few pints. The advice now seems to be not to drink alcohol.  As I'm in the twilight of my life should I carry on as normal or listen to the advice of those who are more informed than me. I'm by no means a heavy drinker,  more a social drinker,  a couple or three times a week.  Any advice please. Thanks again,  Tony

  • Hello Tony

It can be confusing when you're first given a cancer diagnosis and it's natural that you may have questions about some of the advice and information you've been given.

If you have another appointment planned with your Consultant or you've been given details of a nurse that you can contact then I'd really encourage you to chat things through with them as they will be best placed to help you make the decisions that are right for you.

Alternatively you're most welcome to talk with one of our team of nurses for some support and information. they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
