Newly diagnosed tonsil cancer

Hi I was diagnosed on 10/03/23 with scc after a needle biopsy on my lymph node (left of neck)

ive had X-rays pet scan mri, I also had a Doppler scan and ct scan after pet picked up an issue in my carotid artery- apparently unrelated but still waiting to hear! I've also had a throat biopsy under general anaesthetic around 2.5 weeks ago 30/03/23. I'm hoping they're going to be discussing my case in the mdt meeting tomorrow, I have an appointment with my oncologist next week so I'll know my treatment plan by then or before hopefully! They think it's likely hpv + but waiting for confirmation and staging etc. any help/advice would be most welcome! I'm kind of expecting some chemo and 35rads based on other people's stories but I know everyone is different and also there may be some surgery. I'm feeling very positive and upbeat but just want to get on with it now

  • Hey.  Sorry to hear you got the crap news too.  I just got diagnosed on 17/4/23 with same thing :( . Scc hpv tonsil plus one lymph node in neck.  I've had a tonsillectomy 3 weeks ago and right tonsil has come back as primary cancer left tonsil clear. They were very happy with tonsil removal, Doc said doesn't look like it's in wall of neck just lymph node  fully treatable with positive outcome.  Im in shock im up & down with emotions.  My head is spinning.  Literally went for first ent app 7th April and had sooooo many tests plus tonsillectomy since.  Hospital have been amazing and so so quick but my brain can't seem to keep up with it all   very surreal.  Just to add at this point aside of sore throat from tonsilectomy I feel absolutely fine!!!! I kept asking them are u sure ur reading right file ? My husband kids friends & family & work have been amazing in last 4 days.  So much love. Xxxxxxx

  • I'm glad you're getting the right treatment, I had my tonsils removed years ago so no tonsillectomy for me but they biopsied the tonsil area. My throat was really sore for around 2 weeks which surprised me tbh! I've since had biopsy results back and hpv was confirmed which is great due to better prognosis.
mines t1n1 which normally would be stage 3 but the hpv makes it stage one from what I've researched. I can't have surgery as the lymph node is on the artery so creates a risk of dislodging the clot, so they're going to give me chemo and radiotherapy. The clot is being treated with daily aspirin and statins, they said it's likely the cancer that has caused the clot, I guess the body tries to fight off whatever's going on! This makes sense as all my arteries are fine and I'm usually fit and healthy, but this clot is literally right next to the node and the primary tumour. Kelsal, you will have a positive outcome, this video was really helpful I found  https://youtu.be/esXhSpNJfHs

it's such a roller coaster of emotions though!
I feel so weird because I'm so happy they found this clot and over the moon because it's hpv etc. but the fact is I still have cancer and it's still going to be a rough few months ahead! This definitely changes how we look for the positive in things a lot more !!
I hope you get started with your treatment soon, keep us updated! Sending you strength and positivity xx

  • Wow I just watched that video.  I was almost clapping at my own diagnosis.  Thank you so much for sharing that.  I will definately keep updating on here.  Im wishing you so much strength in the coming months.  Let's stay strong &  push forwards.  There's light at the end of our tunnel xxxxxx

    Hi both,

Firstly sorry to hear about both of your diagnosis. My dad was diagnosed with T2 head and neck cancer HPV+ in Right tonsil and right neck lymph node in Jan this year. No symptoms other than small lump in neck. Also diagnosed with prostate cancer on the same day and skin cancer a few weeks later. Been a tough start to the year.

He started chemoradiotherapy in Feb 6 weeks every day 30 sessions in total with 2 chemo along the way. He has been an absolute warrior and powered through the dark days feeling completely wiped. His throat/mouth/tongue are extremely sore but only what they expected and lost taste on and off. His skin on neck now very very sore but again in time that should calm down. The team have been amazing he sees them once a week and they monitor and give pain meds/creams. He also got given lots of special mouth washes and toothpastes to help.

Seeing consultant tomorrow but I think it's a case of wait 12 weeks to see how effective it has been.

Im wishing you both all the best with your journey ahead. Sending all the positivity! X

  • Hi thanks for your response, I'm so glad that all sounds so positive! Fingers crossed his treatment has been successful after such rotten luck!
please let us know how he gets on x

  • Hey sorry I've not been on but its taken me some time to get my head straight.  Had lots going on at hosp with tests etc, recently had dental work in prep for radiotherapy.

My treatment is starting on Monday 12th june.  I have chemo pre assessment today.  I have my ups & downs emotionally.  Terrified of it all starting (as I currently still feel well and would never guess I have cancer!) But at same time just want to get on with it now.

I'm constantly reminding myself that I will hopefully be getting the "all clear" by nov/dec.  Light at the end of the tunnel.  Happy pics of me, hubby & kids in full view to push me on during harder times.

I've had tonsils out April & dental work done 3 weeks ago, now on to 3rd and final  challenge. 7 weeks radiotherapy & 3 lots of chemo (cisplatin)

I hope you are doing well.  I know your were a couple of weeks in front of me for diagnosis.  Do you know your treatment plan? You may have already started. I hope your doing well xx

    Kindest regards

    Kerry
