Scared of having anaesthetic, breast surgery due soon

Having breast surgery in a couple of weeks. I'm petrified of going under . I've never been in hospital or operated on before. How many seconds did you count to before falling asleep? Did they put a mask on your face?

  • Hello I was exactly the same as you,it was fine honestly I didn't wear a mask they put that on when you are asleep, you don't even count down anymore either. They gave me an injection to put me to sleep and that's all I remember.Try not too worry I know we all think of the worst but you will be fine x

  • So glad you were ok. How did you feel when the injection went in to put you to sleep? Did you feel dizzy or drunk? I'm so scared, I know it's silly x

  • Linz

    it's so quick

you lay on bed before you nonit it's done finished you are awake it's very easy and straightforward I wish you the best of luck for it all

    love Lara ️

  • Hi Linz

I think its perfectly normal to be scared. I was too. You can ask for a premed prior to the operation that will calm the nerves and make you sleepy.

You will be fitted with a canula before you go to theatre so you won't feel anything once in theatre.

It's important to keep focus on the reason for the operation ie it will save your life, you'll wake up pain free and cancer free. No more waking up in the morning and thinking about the cancer inside you.

It's a huge relief once it's all over.

Be strong you'll be fine x

  • Hi Linz, I had my surgery today. Anaesthetic was fine and I haven't had a general anaesthetic since I was a child. I would definitely speak to the anaesthetist and your nursing team if you are anxious and they should be able to reassure you or make a couple of adjustments during the process if there is something in particular making you worried. Once the anaesthetic was in I was out very quickly - next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room then back on the ward, all over. There must be plenty of patients who feel anxious about surgery and the medical team will be well experienced in dealing with this. Best of luck with it - I feel very relieved to have my tomour out, xx

  • Thank you so very much, I seem to ask trivial questions but am never made to feel silly. You are all so lovely taking the time to reply to me. I can't thank you enough. I am just terribly terrified xx

  • I didn't feel a thing you go too sleep so quickly, and before you know it your awake, try not to worry,I was also very nervous but when I was going through it I thought what was I worrying about x
