Ductal cancer

Hi my wife has just been told she has ductile cancer in yhe breast and she is thinking od having the breast of instead of them just taking the lumps Away how likely is it to grow back after treatment

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your wife's diagnosis. I also have invasive ductal breast cancer. I am going to have a lumpectomy, but I can't advise you about the risk of recurrence. This is something to be discussed with the surgeon as every case is different (cancer sub-type, grade of tumour, size of tumour in relation to size of breast, spread, etc). There is an article on this website that may be useful www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../lumpectomy-or-mastectomy

I hope she comes to the right decision for her. Ask lots of questions then trust your team to do what's best. I wish her and you all the best.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your self Thanks for getting back to me it's much appreciated I hope you also get through this terrible disease I will take your advice on board you have helped me Thanks again

  • You're welcome. I'm sorry that we have to "meet" under these circumstances, but it's amazing that total strangers can offer each other help and support at such times. Do keep in touch if you feel the need. There's almost always someone online, day or night!

  • Will do thanks to you all it's a great help

  • Hi there,

Sorry to read about your wife's diagnosis.  I was diagnosed with DCIS in two areas and a small invasive cancer a year ago and had a mastectomy last March.  It's a very personal decision but I did really push for the mastectomy.  Initially my surgeon wanted to do a lumpectomy but then further areas of DCIS were found that they had missed at first!  That did it for me, decision made, I wanted the full mastectomy.  My view was that it's safer (for me), despite all the statistics saying there is no greater benefit to mastectomy over lumpectomy.

I didn't have radiotherapy or chemotherapy,  which was a huge relief as both are not without risks.  For example radiotherapy has been known to damage the heart when done on the left and occasionally it can cause further cancers like lymphoma.  After a lumpectomy radiotherapy is always given.  It is not needed after mastectomy.

Its also not unusual for grade to change in post op histology.  My original biopsies showed that my invasive was tiny at 1mm but actually it was 10mm.  Thankfully this didn't change the Grade (1), but I was relieved I'd had the mastectomy as I feared something may have been missed.

Good luck with whatever your wife decides to do in consultation with her surgeon.  They are best placed to advise you on risk of recurrence after the operation.  Ask for her PREDICT score when you see the surgeon post op.

    Best wishes,

    Mary

  • Thank you so much for you advice I hope your recovering well and I will take your advice on board thank you so so much

  • Hi, I received my biopsy results today, I have been diagnosed with grade 3 ductile cancer, oestrogen sensitive.  They are still waiting for the HER result but I'll be booked in for an mri within the next two weeks.  It's a lot to take in but feel more calm that I now have a diagnosis and it seems so far it's not in my lymph nodes so stage should be low x

  • Hi Toottoot,

Many thanks for the update. I am sorry that this was not the news that you ad hoped for. Irrespective of the outcome, most of us feel better once we know what we are dealing with and can start treating it. I hope that your MRI comes through soon.

This is a lot to take in and you will probably feel as if you are wandering around in a daze for the next week or so. I have been through 2 bouts of breast cancer and am still living a busy and fulfilling life 13 years on. Treatments have advanced tremendously in the past few years.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
