Colon cancer with metastatic liver and lungs

My father was diagnosed with rectal cancer a few weeks ago. After mri and ct scans it was identified that  liver and lung metastasis was also the case.

A large amount of the liver has cancer and numerous tumours in the lungs .

My father was given a prognosis last week of 3 - 6 months.

He seems OK and still.managing things. He does have to rest more and suffers chronic diarrhoea and indigestion now seems to be happening

My question is how long before this disease will make him really poorly and will it happen " overnight "

I am trying to manage expectations and wish to know what are the stages and what do I need to expect .

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Keey17, although I'm sorry to hear about the reason that brings you here.

It's difficult for us to say when your father will start to decline, no cancer case is the same from what we read here on the forum. That being said, there's a page on our website called Dying with cancer that covers the last few months or weeks of life with tips for people who are dying of cancer, as well as for their carers, friends and relatives. I hope this can be of use.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that if you feel like speaking with someone on the phone about your father's situation, our team of nurses would be happy to take your call. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this phone number which is free of charge when calling from the UK 0808 800 4040.

And last but not least, please remember we're always here if you need a chat.

Best wishes to you and your father,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
