Core biopsy

Im waiting for a core biopsy after some changes noted on my 3 year mammogram after having BC in 2019. Changes are in opposite breast now so seems may be a second cancer.

does anyone know how long the wait can be for a biopsy please? Is it 2 weeks?

going out my mind

  • Hi sweetie yeah it was found on routine mammogram. It's the type of cancer expected for my age group. Luckily I'm ex nurse so know what to expect. I knew what type and stage I was at when I saw the mammogram, same day had biopsies and ultrasound. X

  • You are lucky you understand it all that would make it easier for me  to be honest.

I spoke to a surgeon a secretary and she said he would know what I had by looking at mammogram but when I spoke to me he wouldn't give a direct answer only to say it was micro calcifications that may be DCIS. But then when I google (I k ow I shouldn't!)it says that micro are DCIS ‍♀️

but to be fair I was in a dreadful state when he called me so probably was being cautious.

so are you having a lumpectomy? And then hopefully just radiation? X

  • Hi Esta,

I have had 2 bouts myself - just 1 year apart. I know what a shock it is to the system. No amount of worry will change the outcome, so try to find something to keep you occupied until you get your results.

You will feel better once you get a full diagnosis, which I hope won't take too long.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks and that must have been horrendous for you - are you ok now or still in treatment?

  • Hi yeah lumpectomy and sentinel lymph nodes removal, then wait to see if margins clear and samples sent for oncotype DX testing which says if I need chemotherapy or just radiotherapy. Then hormone therapy and yearly mammograms.  I found knowledge is power x

  • I agree knowledge is definitely power !
I have read so much on DCIS expecting the worst - although I know if it is that it's low grade but still may mean a mastectomy and I dread that.
just can't believe I may have got a second cancer and finding that much tougher to come to terms with this time.

family been great but my god the "stay positive " comments are infuriating!

I hope you find some peace in all the info you have as I truly believe the waiting and not knowing is the worst part of this journey xx

  • Hi Hun yeah very hard to stay positive when your going through it for second time. What makes you think they will do mastectomy? What surgery did you have the first time? Hopefully it's a really low grade as you said. And you'll need only the minimum surgery. Keep intouch and let me know what happens. I'll add you as friend so we can chat privately. Xx

  • Dr Google as I haven't actually had a face to face appointment with anyone it is my only source of information.

I have read that if the DCIS is in a large area or different areas they may recommended a mastectomy to ensure it doesn't come back ‍♀️

last time I had grade one invasive DCIS so not sure if this has spread or if this is a new thing ‍♀️

wiah I could just see someone and talk to them as have so many questions.. private consultation squeezed me in on a zoom call and I was so upset I wasn't really with it

hope you are ok and not stressing to much x

  • Hi Hun . Hope you get face to face appointment soon.

As for me cool as a cucumber . Not stressed at all. What will be will be. Xx

  • Hi Esta,

It is so much more frightening to be facing this for a second time. Being a nurse doesn't help in these situations.

I had 2 bouts of primary breast cancer within a year, so I can empathise with you. I had a lumpectomy first time around and a double mastectomy for the second bout. Still, that was 13 years ago and I'm still leading a busy and fulfilling life.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx
