Breast cancer warrior - here to help anybody with concerns

I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in October 2021.  Following a mastectomy, lymph node clearance, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone blockers and CDK 4/6 inhibitors (the last couple of which I'm still on) I'm feeling healthy and positive.

I'm here to answer any questions and support anyone who may need a friend.

  • October 21 routine Managram called back then the roller coaster ride.  Lumpectomy lymph node clearance chemotherapy radiotherapy now only go twice a year for Zoledronic acid infusion for my bones.  All ways good to have some one to talk to thank you x

  • Hiya, yes it's strange when the appointments etc calm down isn't it! How are you feeling? Xx

  • Some days better than others I am quite anxious  I feel like I have been in isolation for the last three years covid etc I am all ready getting worked up about going for my next infusion at the end of April.  Some one has asked me to go out for a ride it would be all day this week but am so worried about going out x

  • Why are you getting worked up? Is it the infusion side effects or just the whole being at the hospital thing? Do you not get out much? Are you working? Sending love xxx

    HI TheresaoftheRoses,

Thank you for coming back with the positive news of your cancer treatment. So many people disappear when they've had a good outcome, but it is so helpful for those who are currently going through treatment to have your support.

I myself am 13 years down the line, following 2 bouts of breast cancer and am thankful that I still lead a busy and fruitful life.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, thanks for your message :) I'm glad to hear you're doing well so long after diagnosis.  I found at the start of my journey that there weren't many people sharing positive stories after treatment so I just want to help as I remember what it's like in the scary uncertain times xxx

  • I am so pleased to see this post.  I am currently awaiting radiotherapy after a mammogram screen detected tumour in Dec 2022.  Had lumpectomy with clear margins with  no node involvement.  My surgeon said my tumour was very small 8mm and ER and PR postive.

So, not bad news at all.  But I have been absolutely terrifed of what is to come.  I am due to go on hormone therapy - aromatase inhibitor as I am 57 and I have been shocked by the horrendous stories seen on many forums.  I keep looking for any positive posts.  This is one!    My anxiety is through the roof at the thought of the hormone therapy and feel my active life is about to end and will be crippled and lose all my hair to thinning.   My husband says I must try the tablets, which I know I will, but I feel terrified that the next 5 years are going to be dictated by how I react to the treatment.

It's wonderful to read some upbeat posts, thank you!

  • Hi Theresa,

It's not that there aren't many positive results. If facts are anything to go by, there are 8 times as many as the less favourable ones. It's just that people tend to come to the forum when they're worried and disappear again once they get good news. It is such a help to those who are going through the scary times to hear some good news, so we're delighted to have you here.

    Kind regards.

    Hi Cas,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but glad that you've caught it early. Try not to panic about going on to aromatase inhibitors. Cancer feeds on oestrogen, so these will stop that from happening. Don't upset yoursefl with the horror stories of side-effects. Some people don't get any at all. Even if you do get them, you can cope with them.

I am 13 years down the line, having had 2 bouts of breast cancer wthin a year. I had a lumpectomy first time around and took Tamoxifen for 1 year. For the second bout, I had a double mastectomy followed by Letrozole for 6 and a half years. I stopped taking these in July 2017.  I had a number of side-effects and although I may not be the person that I was pre-diagnosis, I am mentally stronger and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life and every new day is a bonus.

If you find that you cannot manage with aromatase inhibitors, there are alternatives, so you can always discuss these with your consultant if need be.

I sincerely hope that all is plain sailing for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
