mastectomy v lumpectomy

Hi, I am really struggling to choose between a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. I have been diagnose this week with a small Invasive lobular breast cancer. Its in the lower part of my left breast. I have been offered both options a lumpectomy followed by a radiotherapy but a risk it may take a subsequent lumpectomy because of where it is. Unfortunately its not just a me decision as my husband was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with Lymphoma with secondaries in his Liver and Spleen and initially was extremely ill but now just had is second chemo. He is likely to be in the chemo routine until July and then fingers crossed an all clear. We also have 2 children one of whom is about to do her exams in April and May. I want to choose the option that reduces the risk the most long term but also the one that is quicker and less impactful on our lives at the moment so I am there for the family. I have been told of various experiences of radiotherapy wiping you out with tiredness and my current thinking if this is the case this wont be ideal for caring for my husband and less impactful on the kids. Really appreciate anyone’s advice who have been through this thank you

  • Hi Kate

I'm the partner of someone who has had a lumpectomy last year. My wife was initially down for a mastectomy due to the area affected, however, she got a total response to the chemo, so it was downgraded to a lumpectomy.

From what we learned, not all lumpectomies are equal. Some border on mastectomies whilst others aren't as major. It just all depends on your specific area and the amount affected. On paper, lumpectomies seem the better option as the name kinda insinuates it's a lot minor and less breast loss. But some are biggies.

This isn't said to frighten you, but my wife went into this blind and everything she saw on the internet made out it was a fairy minor thing compared to a mastectomy and because she is friends with others who have had mastectomies, she found this wasn't true at all in all cases. It took my wife longer to recover compared to one of her friends who got the mastectomy.

The only person that can give you detailed and somewhat accurate information on your case will be the surgeon.

All things being equal, a massive part of it comes down to you and what you want. What i mean by that, some women just want it off and to be done with it, whilst women like my wife want to remain "normal" as possible if they can. It's a truly personal choice. I think done correctly, there are no right or wrong answers and both seem to have the same success rate from what we read (this may not be true as we only read it from the net).

I'm wishing you all the best and i know it's not gonna be an easy choice either way. You women inspire me each and every day.

  • Thank you so much for a very detailed response it is very much appreicated and hope your wife is doing ok xxx

  • Hi I understand your dilema when my sister had the same choice to make either the lump or the whole breast ,I remember saying if it was me I'd have a mastectomy because I'd be frightened it came back but she went for the Lumpectomy and Radiotherapy that was when she was 45 she's now 62 and she has been fine since then .

  • Thank you and glad she has been good for nearly 20 years! How tired was she during the Radiotherapy

  • I don't know to be honest I think back then it wasn't as quick as what it is now and she had to go every weekday for weeks not for a few days like people do now ,Its almost like it never happened now its never talked about ,anyway I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you ,Best Wishes Jenny .

also radiotherapy for breast cancer has changed the last few years it used to be 15 sessions it's now changed to 5 for most people research has shown that the reduced is equal

    hope this helps

  • Hiya.

I had 6 rounds of chemo , then a mastectomy and finished with radiotherapy back in 21/ 22. My son was the same as urs in taking his exams but luckily I sailed thru it with only tiredness from chemo but I could still function normally. Radiotherapy is a doddle honestly . Just keep urself hydrated and look after ur skin. U ve got this xx
