Major abdonminal surgery...recovery help and tips

Hello all

I have recently been diagnosed with a 18cm left adrenal tumour. It's suspected cancer due to size and how fast it's grown (first scanned 2021 at 34mm). I'm awaiting test results to see if it's hormone functioning and they will test for cancer after it has been removed on potentially the 9th Feb.

I'm quite nervous about recovery and complications. I will be in hospital for a week which will be fine as I will have help and assisting equipment. But once I get home, I'm on my own. There is no one able or that I can reasonably ask to look after me. So I gotta figure this out myself. My main worries are getting a hernia or being stuck in bed when I desperately need the toilet. I won't be able to use my abdominal muscles for a while. I know bladder is more pelvic floor but I already start every morning in immense pain from my bladder from holding it in all night (i do go before bed but i drink a lot). When I have to go, I have to go quickly.

Has anyone else had major abdominal surgery to remove their tumour? How was it for you?

Was there anything you bought that made you more comfortable or aided you with movement?

How did you keep yourself clean? My shower is attached to the bath and I'm worried about being stuck in the bath after shower.

Many thanks in advance to anyone that replies

  • Hello Pastelfox

I'm sorry to hear that you need such big surgery. It's natural that you may be feeling anxious about how you'll cope once you're discharged.

It's good to hear that you've already been told you'll be in hospital for a week after your surgery. This will give you chance to rest but also I suspect that the physiotherapy team may visit you on the ward to help you get up and start mobilizing short distances. Do talk to the nurses and physiotherapy team about your concerns. They will want to make sure that your discharge is as safe as possible and may be able to liaise with the occupational therapy team to organise short-term loans of equipment that you need at home to help you safely get about.

If you have another appointment before your surgery then you can always mention your concerns then. It may be that they're able to reassure you beforehand.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses for some support and advice you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to chat with you.

Sending my best wishes for your surgery next month.
