DCIS High Grade

So... I was diagnosed with DCIS High Grade last week Wednesday and was told I'll need a mastectomy and reconstruction.

I met with the breast surgeon on Tuesday to discuss options and because I'm going with the option of taking tissue from the abdomen, I'll need to have the surgery in another, bigger hospital. It also means I'll have to have the lymph node removal separately, which is being done tomorrow. Initially it was supposed to be next Thursday but they phoned me on Tuesday afternoon to say it's been moved to this Friday. Next Wednesday I'm going to see the plastic surgeon in the other hospital to discuss the surgery.

It's all happening so quickly! I feel like I've been sucked into a vortex and hurtling along at hyperspeed! I'm so worried about logistics of how my family will cope when I'm in hospital, how I'll cope afterwards... it's very overwhelming.

  • Hi Minnie

sorry you sound all over the place my heart goes out to you .

firstly try and take things one step at a time lovely .ypu will manage and cope everyone does it's just a panick of the unknown and once operation is done you will be thinking why did I worry so much . The only difference is you can't drive or lift anything heavy .

wny are they taking lymph nodes away at a different hospital at a different time to your operation .

this normally happens the same time they take a biopsy of sentil nodes it's not a seperate operation if they are positive for cancer they then do another operstion to remove all lymph nodes , at a later date but the sentil nodes have to be positive before they do this lovely .

Did they tell you which cancer it os and what grade ect ?

  • Hi Lara

Because they'll be using tissue from my abdomen, they'll be attaching it to blood vessels in my armpit, so they won't be able to go back there to remove the remaining lymph nodes if they're positive.

The plastics team that does the reconstruction using my tissue is at a different, bigger hospital. My breast surgery consultant will work with the plastics team and they'll still do the mastectomy and reconstruction in one operation. She'll travel to the other hospital.

    Hi Minnie Mouse,

This is a lot to take in, but I well remember feeling that my life had been totally taken over at your stage. Everything happens so quickly and plans often change like the weather. It sounds as if your consultant has everything in hand. Laraj is right, try to deal with one thing at a time and you will eventually get there.

I shall be thinking of you tomorrow and hope that all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
