Awaiting results - Advice appreciated

Hi,

My mum 65 has had numerous tests/results and has been told she has a shadow on her lung. Thursdays she has a PET scan but things already sound fairly conclusive.

Good news is it sounds very early days if reported accurately.

I don't really have anyone to talk about how I feel and who will understand. It hit home today when I told a good friend and they gave me that look and said how sorry they were. I have heard people talk about that look but god it hit me. Almost brought the reality home.

I will be the supportive practical rock. Does anyone have any tips or advise that might help me emotionally but also with my mums struggles moving forward.

Thanks in advance

  • Hello Charlotte and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum. I hope that you won't have to wait too long for the PET scan results and that these will shed some light on what is definitely going on so that you have a clear diagnosis soon. Do come back here if you get a chance and update us on what you find out.

It's good though that it seems to be caught early - fingers crossed the results will confirm this soon.

It's normal to feel a bit isolated when faced with something like this and to feel like no one around us can truly understand. This is why the Cancer Chat forum provides a safe space to meet others you may not know in person but who understand - sometimes better than your loved ones - what you are dealing with at the moment.

It's great that you feel you will be a supportive practical rock for your mum. Your mum hasn't had a diagnosis yet so perhaps it may not be cancer - I keep everything crossed for you. There is some good advice though on our website for family, friends and caregivers to help you support a loved one through illness but also to ensure you do not forget to also take care of yourself in these difficult circumstances.

As you're having to wait to find out more at the moment and it's bound to be a stressful time waiting for results, I thought I would also share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Keeping everything crossed for you and your mum and I hope you find out more very soon.

    Best wishes,
