Colon Cancer Diagnosis at 40

I was diagnosed with colon cancer this week. Following colonoscopy, CT and MRI, doctors confirmed they've found a large tumour, which due to its size and position, means I'll need radiotherapy and a long course of chemo before surgery can be considered. I'm currently waiting for another MRI and a PET scan to check the rest of my body (they think they might have seen something on my liver but not sure). The hardest part is the uncertainty about how bad this might be and how treatment will effect me - not just for me but my family too (fortunately my toddler daughter is to young to understand). Now more than ever I'm realising the importance of reaching out to those who care about me for support, especially when I'm at a point in my life when my responsibilities are at their highest. I'm also lucky to have an understanding employer who are giving me the time to focus on what I need to do. Taking it one day at a time.

  • Hi there, my husband had his MRI Monday ancc so I think MDT meeting was today but we haven't heard. How long did it take for them to come back to you to say nothing was there and did they call you, or ask you in for an appointment. Sorry hope you don't mind me asking. I'm just so worried, an just pray that the scan is clear!

  • So I rang them and left a message on the morning of my MDT meeting and they called back about 30 minutes later to give me the news. Did they say if/when they would call you? The nurse I spoke to explained that some people prefer to hear the results in person rather than over the phone, so it could be that if you have an upcoming meeting with the surgeon then they might be assuming you want to wait for that. Sometimes it helps to nudge them as they are always busy.

  • Hi, I think they were meeting today so hopefully hear tomorrow at latest!

  • Hello, how did you opp go? Xx

  • Well it's over which I'm v relieved about

I think I underestimated how big the surgery actually was I had this thought in my head that I'll be wandering out of here two days after the operation

every single member of staff has been amazing at my hospital but I have have felt v poorly I don't think the fentanyl helped. It turned me into a raving lunatic for 48 hours so I've now declined all apart from paracetamol, because at least that way I'm still in the land of sane!!!

how are you doing? Any news!!!

  • I am glad you are recovering ok and that it's over now. Wishing you all the best! Sadly he has 2 small tumours (less than 1cm in the liver) so now they want to do a PET scan and see what the next steps are. I'm heartbroken and so worried!

  • Hello my lovely, try not to worry too much until they actually come back and tell you what's going on it's never easy for waiting I think it's the hardest bit
let me know how he gets on and I'll keep you updated on my progress but I'm much more interested in how you guys are getting on

    All thoughts
