Tamoxifen as option prior to having lumpectomy

Hi, I received my full BC prognosis today. The MRI showed the lump to be 10mm bigger than the ultrasound (was 0.9mm), although the doctor did say that the scans cannot determine size with any reasonable accuracy. The ultimate treatment plan is to have lumpectomy, gland surgery, possibly reconstructive surgery and then radiotherapy. Is reconstructive surgery necessary? I am confused about that and having to meet with the plastic surgeon. If the size is 19mm and then need to remove another 1cm more of tissue does this call for reconstructive surgery?

The other option I have is to take tamoxifen for 3/6 months to shrink/halt the growth and then review. Surgery would still be required but would be less invasive and potentially no need for reconstructive surgery. I'm giving myself this week to think things through but I did not have a marker put in at time of biopsy and doctor said if I go down the hormone therapy route I would need to have the marker inserted.

Seems to be mixed views on tamoxifen so would appreciate anyone who has had this prior to surgery to share their experience as I'm not sure what the benefits are vs risks. Did anyone consider this was worth doing given the risks and the need to have surgery anyway? I am 49, premenopausal and still have periods. I know only I can decide but just trying to gather information to make an informed decision.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Mimo,

I noticed you haven't had a reply to your post just yet so I just wanted to stop by and let you know your post has been seen.

Hopefully some of our members who have been presented with similar options will let you know what they decided to do soon but if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions.

I hope this information we have about reconstructive surgery and tamoxifen will come in handy as well but in the meantime, we're thinking of you Mimo and hope you're able to come to a decision soon.

    All the best,
