Is private treatment recommended for skin cancer on knee?

My Dad just got diagnosed with skin cancer but it has already been a lengthy process to get to told he has cancer and that it is spreading. It looks like the NHS will not be quick to treat. He already had surgery to remove skin but has been told after several weeks that it has spread and likely needs chemotherapy. A significant area of skin was already removed - I think it was around 4 cms. Glasgow area.

Should he look at private options?

Are any able to handle this situation and recommended?

What is the approximate cost for this? Any tips?

  • Hi glaswegian,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your Dad - I hope you are all getting on OK.

Considering private treatment is always a personal thing - it may be possible, but of course could be costly. It may be worth getting all the information (in terms of next steps, timescales, and so on) from the NHS team so you know what you're dealing with, and then if needs be you could also explore other avenues if you wish.

We have some information on our website about comparing NHS treatment with private treatment - this may be helpful.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
