Just diagnosed with tonsil cancer.

Hello,

I was given my results on Saturday, and I have been diagnosed with tonsil cancer. I have my first treatment meeting tomorrow.

The overwhelming feelings  I have are regret and guilt. I feel this is my fault because of the large amount of alcohol I have drunk over the years. It's a debilitating sensation.

On a practical level, how long might the radiotherapy treatment last?

  • I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. Do you know if your cancer is HPV positive? If it is, then your past drinking habits would not have had as much of an impact on your condition as you think. HPV related cancers are not lifestyle cancers and also respond better to treatment.

Your team will decide the type of treatment & length of treatment you will undergo according to your case. It varies quite a bit, I believe, according to the specifics of the diagnosis.

No doubt others will be along soon with help and encouragement to enable you to get a better dea of what lies ahead. The good news is that there are many of us who have survived it. I personally am 4.5 years post 1st tonsil cancer and 3.75 years post 2nd (unrelated) occurrence.

I wish you all the best in these testing times.

One day at a time. In your own way.
