Expectations

My mum has just been diagnosed with secondary peritoneal cancer, following hemi colectomy. MDT decision is to watch & wait then treat symptoms palliatively. Anyone with any experience of this able to shed any light on what we can expect? From reading literature online, 6 months seems average life expectancy- is this approx accurate (know there are no guarantees). I'm just trying to get my head around on how the foreseeable future looks. Thanks

  • Hi Maggie,

I'm afraid the only honest answer is "it depends".

Doctors are always being reminded not to apply statistics to individual patients. They are good predictors for large numbers of people but not for low numbers and especially not for just one.

Age and physical fitness both have an impact on survival rates as these affect our ability to cope with and recover from treatment. The stage at which diagnosis were made and the aggressiveness of the cancer will also have an influence on the outcome.

I think the patient's mental attitude is important too. Not in a mystical way but in more pragmatic ways. People who have lost hope and are convinced that an imminent death is inevitable are less likely to report a deterioration in their condition. Restarting treatment as early as necessary must affect the outcome - a stitch in time and all that!

Having things to look forward to must help too. A friend was determined to see her daughter get married - she really tried hard to fight it and lasted 6 months longer than predicted. Yes, she was there at the wedding :-)

A friend who is a doctor gave me some useful advice. Don't ask a doctor "how long has Mum got" but ask "would you be surprised if she was still around at Christmas/her birthday/her annuversary" They are less likely to clam up that way.
My Mam asked about her birthday "no that wouldn't surprise me and her anniversary "yes that would surprise me". She actually died almost halfway between the two.

It doesn't always work though - I got a "no that wouldn't surprise me" to Christmas 2013 and a "yes that would really surprise me" to Easter 2014 when I asked about my own chances.

    Good luck.

    Dave
