  • Hi,

So sorry you are going through this, I can't help but everybody here is very nice and someone will come along and give you some great advice.

  • Hello, we are new to this realm of prostate cancer. My husband received confirmation of his diagnosis a few weeks ago and we are anxiously awaiting results of yet another test.  We had difficulty getting to speak to anybody rather than an answerphone in the first days and weeks. But we have learned the hard way but the following are human beings you might actually be able to talk to:

the patient information and liaison service (PILS) at you local hospital trust ( Sometimes called Patient advisory and information service( PALS) they were very helpful and gave me the phone number of the next group of people:

The urology services manager team at the hospital They have been brilliant in arranging appointments etc

The hospital prostate cancer nurse specialist team brilliant for giving results, info and hastening appointments. Very caring about us as a couple, too!

(in fact, I am convinced that if these 3 groups of people were running the NHS it would not be in the mess it is in! Ok, they might need an accountant or two!)

I am having a good day today but the tears and fear are never far away. We know that my husbands latest result will be on the hospital computers today but we decided not to ask for them because not knowing is better than knowing we are in the worst case scenario!  After nights of little sleep and anxiety +++ we gave ourselves a 'cancer free day ' today before the next dollop of bad news.

Of course there are the usual channels: consultants secretary's answerphone which are never actually answered; GP telephone queues: emails which disappear into cyberspace and don't get answered: hospital switchboard operators who send you on a wild goose chase around every ward and department ( do they do it for fun!??)

I do hope all goes well for you both and my new- found expertise in all things prostate cancer really hopes that ' low grade cancer' means that ''low grade' is a cause for optimism and 'cancer' can be given the boot.  Wish we were that lucky (sigh)
