Radiotherapy or not ?

I had breast sparing surgery in July for a stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma.  At the time and during follow up appointments I was told I'd need radiotherapy too.  In between times I had major surgery for a totally unrelated benign condition.  That didn't go too well and I spent much longer in hospital due to complications.  Between that and excessive weight loss radiotherapy couldn't go ahead as planned in early September.  I had an appointment for marking up again yesterday.  Because I had concerns about the delay one of the nursing staff arranged for me to speak to an Oncologist for reassurance.  Unfortunately that has just made things more difficult as they suggested that radiotherapy isn't likely to be particularily helpful and if for any reason it's delayed beyond 6 months it's a waste of time.  I'm not sure whether that's due to the delay or the early stage.  I will complete treatment within 4 months of the surgery unless anything else untoward crops up.  I was supposed to have 5 treatments over a week. The nurse spoke to me prior to leaving the hospital but had assumed I'd been reassured and was in agreement to radiotherapy.  To be honest I didn't discuss the conversation I'd had with the Oncologist with her as it wasn't really what I'd expected.  It's been suggested I make a decision soon and get back to the hospital. I'm reluctant to contact the nurse again as I really should have been more open with her yesterday.

  • Hello AnneC

I'm sorry to hear that despite speaking with the Oncologist you're still struggling with the decision about what is the best way forward for you.

Don't feel that you can't contact your nurse specialist if you're still feeling uncertain. Be honest with her about your concerns and how you're struggling with your decision.

Alternatively, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. It may help to talk to someone who has clinical knowledge but isn't directly involved in your care for some support.

    Best wishes,
