DCIS surgery - anyone had centre portion of breast removed?

Hello, I've had a microdochectomy done where a milk duct which was discharging blood was removed. The surgeon has now said they need to remove the remaining ducts, tissue and the nipple aerola to see if it has spread. Has anyone had their centre portion of breast removed?

The Breast Care Nurse who has been assigned to me seems too busy for me. She said she would call me on a follow up call after my results I waited for her to ring me the following week, nothing I eventually called her and the response was I've been busy in clinics not heard anything from her since. Also I feel when I talk to her I can hear it in her voice it's like im a Nuisance to her. I'm in shock I have been diagnosed with this the results were given to me and that's it it's like I'm expected to deal with it! I've had no support from the BCN. I'm soon booked in for this op but I'm feeling scared off losing the nipple and aerola so wondered if anyone else has been through this?

  • Hello Mandyys

I'm sorry to hear that following the recent microdochectomy you've now been told that you need further surgery. It's understandable that you have questions and concerns.

It's really unfortunate to hear that you don't feel supported by your breast care nurse. They would be the first point of contact that I'd normally suggest talking to.

I know that we have lots of women on the forum who have been through different types of breast surgery and lost all/part of their breasts, including nipple/areola. Hopefully some of them will reply to share their experiences and advice with you.

In the meantime, I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with our team of nruses. I know they will be happy to try and offer some advice and support ahead of your surgery. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Mandy and let us know how you're doing.

  • Thanks Jenn, I really appreciate you coming back to me. I paid to meet with another surgeon privately he was amazing and explained everything. He went through everything with me and very supportive. He's told me I will be ok and what will happen during the op. It's just a shame I had to pay to get this support.

once again thank you so much for coming back to me.

  • Hi Mandyys

I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling more reassured about things although yes it's a shame that you had to seek that support and clarification through a private consultation.

I hope that everything goes well with your surgery and that the healing process is swift.

    Best wishes,
