Breast cancer radiotherapy

Hello everyone

I am new to this forum,

I was diagnosed with breast cancer early stages not long ago and have already had surgery to remove lump aswell as make both breasts look as similar as they can as alot was removed,  this has all happened so quickly my head is spinning.

I am now waiting for a date for radiotherapy to start and have been told I am having 10 sessions and just wanted to hear from people that have experienced radiotherapy for breast cancer and what can I expect to feel like during and after many thanks in advance.

  • Hi [@Kelle]‍  and welcome to the forum.

I only had five sessions of radiotherapy for breast cancer, and hopefully others will come along who had a similar regime to you. But I found it no problem at all.  You'll have your pre-rads session where they line you up on the bed, take measurements and photos/scan, and maybe give you minuscule dot tattoos to aid positioning.  But the actual sessions themselves are super short.  For me they involved lying down, being put in position by the radiographers, and then left in the room for a couple of minutes while the radiotherapy took place.  I just had to lie still.  The machine moved around me but I couldn't feel anything at all.  I felt fine during and after, though have heard from some people that they experienced fatigue, sometimes occurring up to several months later.

It's important to keep your breast skin moist and supple - I started moisturising a couple of weeks beforehand and continued for weeks afterward.  My team said it was fine to continue using any product I was familiar with, but if I started something new to make sure it had minimal additives.  The point is to avoid the risk of your radiotherapy coinciding with an allergic reaction to a fancy new moisturiser!  But you should have a pre-rads appointment when you sign the consent form and get all this info.

I got a very faint tan in the radiotherapy area, but that soon faded.  For me there were no other notable side effects.  Best of luck with your treatment! x

  • Hi Kell, I had two separate breast cancers 3 years apart with radiotherapy both times for each.  I hope I can give you some reassurance that it's really not that bad.  There's a lot of waiting around and I had 15 sessions over 3 weeks each time.  The first appointment is like a setting up, you lie on a table and they do measurements with a laser beam (you don't feel anything) so that when you have the session the machine is already preset to your personal requirements.  After that each session is really quick, you just put on a gown, lie down and breathe in and hold your breath when they tell you to through a PA system.  I would say it lasts about 5 minutes.  I felt nothing at all until a few weeks after when I just felt a bit tireder than usual and skin a little red and sore like mild sunburn, but it might not even have been the treatment causing the fatigue.  As I say, getting there, parking and waiting for the session which was occasionally delayed was the worst!  Good luck with your treatment and recovery.
