Non small cell Egfr mutation Lung Cancer

Hello,

My sister has juts been diagnosed with non small cell Lung Cancer and has the Egfr mutation. In August She was told she had cancer in her lung and spine and then not given any more information until yesterday. They missed it on a scan 4 months before and possibly even early as she has been treated for a slipped disk (where the cancer is) for 2 years.

She had intensive radiotherapy a few weeks ago. She was given Osimerttinib yesterday on a low dose and then may have denosumab added. The oncologist told her to stop taking all the alternative therapies she is doing and only take the targetted treatment.

She is 40 and has 3 children and we are desperate. I recently had stage 3 melanoma so I know what we are looking at and I also know that time isn't on our side and we need to act quickly. What about surgery? Can she really not take the alternatives? Her notes are currently in Birmingham while they try and work out if they missed it and the hospital in Wales hasn't given her any info. There is a really good cancer centre in Bristol but how can I get her in there? What can we do and where do we go for information? Any help, anything would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hello MelanomaMelodrama,

I'm sorry to hear about your sister, but her medical team will be best to discuss the next steps after radiotherapy and whether surgery is an option. It's important to know that alternative treatments, which is different to complimentary treatments, could have impact on conventional treatment like radiotherapy. As her doctor advised, it's important to stop using any alternatives. If your sister wishes to have a second opinion, there is information here, which might be useful. Our cancer are available on the freephone 0808 800 4040. Lines are open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

All the best to you and your sister,
