losing lung funtion: should I go for lung cancer surgery?

hope someone can advise on this. I have to have an operation to remove a cancer from my lung. It is quite small at the moment but will need an operation. Consultant says I will lose 15% of lung function or worse about 25%. I am not sure what this will mean to my normal life - breathing etc. Need to get some quick information as I have to make a decision on Monday

  • Hello Larrym and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear you will need to have an operation to remove cancer from your lung. There is information on our website on lung cancer surgery including the lobectomy which you can find on this page. I hope you won't mind but I have slightly edited the title of your post to include the words 'lung cancer surgery' - this will ensure it is more easily spotted by other forum members who may have had the same type of surgery before.

It's difficult to know what to do and I hope that you can discuss your options with your consultant very soon. Try and ask if you can to your consultant how much losing lung function would impact on your life - this is something they will have the expertise to tell you more about.

Perhaps you could try and give our cancer nurses a call first thing on Monday to talk things through with them? Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040.

I will now let other members who may have had this type of surgery before come and say hello and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
