Hi all, my first time posting.

My husband had an operation as he had a melomona that was cancerous. They operated on his back again but this time quite a bit was cut out, 2 lymph nodes removed in his neck and 1 from his underarm.

They said the results would take 2 to 3 weeks. We are on our third week, we have phoned and just keep getting told that it could now take 4 to 6 weeks. Is this normal as we are mentally drained waiting and scared that it has spread. The lady at the hospital said sometimes no news is good news and a nurse friend  said that if it was cancer you get told within a week as they fast track it. I'm going out my mind with worry.

Many thanks

  • Hi,

I'm really sorry but this delay is the norm at most hospitals at the moment. The average appears to be 6 weeks so I'm afraid you have a bit longer to wait. I'm quite surprised that the hospital employee made the 'no news' remark as that is simply not the case. There is no 'seniority' in how long it takes to receive good or bad results. Your friend is also wrong about cancer results being delivered within a week - oh how we wish that was the case! Even Pre Covid, results took an average of 2 weeks.

I hope you hear sooner rather than later and that the WLE and SLNB results are clear. Please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Many thanks for your reply.

The waiting is agonising isn't it.

We dont even know why they took 2 lymph nodes from his neck to be honest, I'm not sure if this is normal procedure ?

He's diabetic and it's a very slow healing process, he's feeling unwell in himself, he sleeps alot and gets full quickly when eating. He says he has aches and pains down his back and neck and arms still. We have phoned the doctor but can't get an appt and his hospital follow up isn't for a fair few weeks yet.

I appreciate you taking the time to chat about this.

  • 5 weeks tomorrow and still no results , phoned hospital and all they say is I can't tell you what I don't know.

We both feel we are going to explode soon

  • Hi Sarah.
what region of the UK are you in?
There does seem to be a backlog up and down the country.

I've been informed that the backlog can be down to administration rather than the actual testing. But obviously I can't say that for certain.
Sadly, I'm in a very similar position and will have been waiting 8 weeks tomorrow.

  • We are in the Norfolk area.

Sorry your in the same situation, its really a horrible place to be in your head thinking all sorts. Everyday ends with no phone call, we are actually made to feel we shouldn't be phoning up chasing results tbh.
