Cancer Diagnosis Before Biopsy

Hi, found a lump about 5 weeks ago, 1cm x 2cm. Dr said it was a red flag and submitted a rapid referral which resulted in me being at breast clinic on Monday.

i had an examination, then lots of mammograms - think around 8, 4 each side. Then I went through for an ultrasound and the dr said before she started that there where discrepancies on my mammograms which she had to look into.

She took a long time, very through and around 10 screen shots, she showed me where cysts where that she said where normal, and then a chalky mass. She took a biopsy x3 and put a titanium marker in me.

I then was sent back to the waiting room to join my chap, before being called in for discussions about findings. I was told that it was being treated as sinister and that it hadn't spread to my lymphs, that treatment plans would be discussed on my next appt which I should expect to be on weds after my biopsy results are back. My bf then asked directly "are you saying it IS cancer" and she replied "Yes. I am sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear".

I can't stop thinking that prior to biopsy results surely this could be wrong still as can they say for sure at this point?

  • Hi lil pops

I was told suspicions on my first appointment had like you mammogram biopsy ultrasound, I was told to come back in a week and bring my husband so knew just needed confirmation xx

  • Hi Laraj,

Thank you for your reply. I hope you are ok?

  • Hi lil pops

I did thibk that they have to have biopsy results back before they diagnose , but I'm not 100 percent sure , hopefully someone on here may have had same experience the guys on here are so warning and helpful , I hope you get answers xx

how are you feeling I bet that was a shock ?

  • That's what I thought, but my chap clarified and was told yes it's cancer so I don't know if I am clutching at straws. It all feels so surreal. I don't know how to feel. I think after Weds it will be better as I'm wondering whether I can still be told that it's nothing. I have three children and they are all I can think about xx

  • I would deffo wait till Wednesday as you could be worrying unnecessarily get it properly diagnosed it's a terrible time the wait ot the worse xx keep busy babe I no it's hard xx

  • But if it's the worst news , there are so many treatments and help now it's not like it was years ago  xx

  • Hi LilLoops

This gets brought up here often. Doctors stating something is sinister before it's confirmed via biopsy. This was our own experience too. Being told not to go home thinking it will come back as anything but a malignancy.

As i have said previously on here, they do get it wrong sometimes, and there are stories, the internet over alluding to this. However, it's only a small minority this happens to. It's very rare. By the same token, someone has to be in that small minority, so why not you?

I would take the remaining days before your next appointment to try and get your head around the news you were given so you're not having to hear the same devastating news twice over so to speak.

You are correct insofar as a biopsy is the only method that can give you a 100% diagnosis, but these people deal with this regularly, and yeah, unfortunately they are very rarely wrong.

It's also hugely positive news that the lymphs seem to have been clear. Best of luck to you and hoping things go well.

  • Hi [@LilLoops]‍

The ultrasound lady told me that she suspected mine was cancer before she did my biopsy. Cancer has very specific visible characteristics- (jagged edges, milky cloudy debris within the tumour, cysts are black, very smooth, oval shaped). I could see it on the screen and even I thought "gosh that doesn't look good". Also she said to me "if the lump drains when I put the needle in to biopsy, then that's a good sign " (because a cyst would pop).  Mine didn't drain. The biopsy confirmed it was cancer.

There are occasions where they are incorrect. Fibrodenomas can show similar characteristics to cancer. After I was diagnosed, I had a breast mri and this flagged up areas of concern that I was warned looked like additional tumours. Anyway, the biopsies on these additional areas showed they were fibrodenomas.

I know it is a very worrying time. I can honestly say that waiting for biopsy results was the worst bit of this whole process. I think they prewarn you to "soften the blow" for want of a better phrase. When are you due to get your results? x

  • Thank you, I have been booked in to see the dr on Weds. i was told he was discussing the biopsy results with his team Friday and Weds I get info about the stage and whats-what, along with my treatment plan.

  • Thank you for your reply, so basically I'm thinking then that its as near as dammit then that cancer it is.
