Wide local exicsion on calf

Hi All,

I have just had my appointment through for my wide local excision next week. The area where i am having the procedure is midway down inside of my left calf.

They struggled closing my original biopsy site as i have quite muscly legs and the nurse thought i may well have a skingraft.

I have discussed with my nurse that i will need to keep my leg elevated after the procedure but I wondered if anyone has had one in a similar area, as to if i will need crutches after?

Now my appointment is getting nearer i am trying to get my head around what my mobility will be afterwards?

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

  • Hi,

I had mine on the front of my shin and just got away without having to need a skin graft so I didn't need any crutches. If you have a graft they may well provide crutches but not all hospitals do. I suggest you contact the nurse to enquire about this.

Elevation is very important to help reduce any bleeding and swifter healing. For my shin mole, and the excision of moles on my foot and upper leg, I elevated as much as possible for 2 days. I then managed to hop around the house for a few days before becoming a little more mobile. Everyone is different so just listen to your body and don't push yourself too quickly, especially if you have to have a graft so you will have 2 surgical areas to heal.

I have sent you a friend request so that, should you wish more information, we can chat by pm. Good luck with your WLE and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie,

Thanks very much for your reply, it's great to hear other people experience about something that feels a bit scary.

    Thanks again,
