squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis

Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma from advanced core biopsy of a cyst in my neck, ive also had Mri scan which shows enlarged retrophayrngeal node to 9mm and a chest ct scan which appeared normal.  My doctor has told me he can't locate a primary source of the cancer so i am being sent for a pet scan on tuesday and already booked in for surgery on the 22nd of this month.

Im 40 years old and extremely worried about what my life is going to be like moving forward. My doctor said if pet scan doesn't show primary source then he will remove the cancerious branchial cyst, take out my tonsils and remove some of the back of my tongue.

Does anyone on here know of any alternative to partial glossectomy as im very worried about voice changes (speaking / singing and also risk of food going into places in the body it shouldn't.

My doctor told me this cancer is highly treatable and would expect me to be in for day surgery and home same day but of course all depends on the results of pet scan.

I've been reading some of peoples experiences on here and my heart goes out to you all and hope i can come through this.

  • It would seem i've picked my surgeon up wrong. My wife spoke to the nurse yesterday and we got told the dr i seen is a surgeon and the procedure on the 22nd is to take biopsies under general anistetic in accordance to pet scan data. I aparently need to see an oncologist (cancer doctor) first to agree a treatment plan and go from there. i wont see an oncologist till 6th of october and that scares me.

My concern is they already know its in one lymph node and worried that its going to spread and im going to end up needing a lot more surgery or terminal. I've no idea how quickly this can spread but google says its aggresive.

The Surgeon should get the pet scan before the day of the surgery and i wonder if its bad things might change. ive discovered a relatively large white patch on the roof of my mouth and worry that its spread there. i'm also geting sinus pressure and theres a danger with the retropharngeal node also enlarged of it rupturing and causing severe problems.

I think on the grand scheme of things the nhs are moving at a decent pace but i feel they could remove the lump on the 22nd as thats going to be getting done regardless of other treatment surely?

  • thats good i would think your radiotherapy will be in another 5 weeks ?

  • Hi,

it sounds like exactly what I'm going thru I have had a lump in my neck and after loads of mri pet ct scan and others they finally removed it.

they done a biopsy and found cancer cells so they wanted to remove my tonsils and take a sample of my tongue.

however in the surgery the found my primary cancer was a leacion on my tongue so my tonsils survived I'm starting chemo and radiotherapy next week and waiting for a biopsy result so fingers Crossed all will be ok.good luck hopefully they locate yours when they have a look ste

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply, im going out of my mind with worry and over analysing my body. can i ask if you were getting a burning sensation in your tongue or back of throat?  Any nodes needing treated?

  • My lymph node swelled up so as part of the process they removed it.

no real burning tho my throat was slightly sore now and again that's about it really.

so now I have the scar from under my ear to close to my Adam's apple.

i have 2 friends who have had similar both had chemo and radiotherapy and both have had no return.

so I'm hopefull it's a bit common and caught early like it sounds like you I think a couple of months of upheaval you will be fine I honestly think that as I think of myself too
