Recently diagnosed

Hi everyone,

I am 29 years old and last week I was diagnosed with a grade 3 invasive ductal breast cancer. I believe it is both ER and PR positive. I have just had all my blood tests, MRI, CT and bone scans in the last few days.

My breast consultant was extremely surprised my results came back positive as according to him and the radiographer the lump looked and felt benign. So it all came as a bit of a shock.

I guess I am slowly coming to terms with the cancer diagnosis, but what I'm really struggling to come to get my head round is the fact I'm looking at 9 months of chemo followed by surgery and hormone therapy for a number of years.

I have a 3 year old daughter and I have no idea how to tell her what's going on, or that I'm likely to loose my hair, (our favourite game to play is hairdressers)

I just don't know what to do or say for the best she is asking so many questions I have no idea how to answer her. If anyone has any advice or coping strategies with dealing with chemo and telling my daughter I'd love to hear them!

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Hannah

Gosh what a shock for you, I was diagnosed in November with Stage 1 Grade3 invasive Ductal carcinoma her2- lymph node negative oestrogen positive. I had a lumpectomy, and Chemo FEC-t for 6 sessions once every three weeks and 8 Radiotherapy sessions. I'm now on Anastrole and prostap injections for 5 years.

I have two sons 11,14 im 38. I actually didn't tell my sons, because my dad had just passed away five days before with a brain tumour and their other grandad a year before with lung cancer, I just couldn't do it.

I used the cold cap, I was able to keep enough hair to look relatively normal, where I lost it it stated growing back before my last Treatment and grew back like my hair and really fast.

You can get some really good wigs. Your breast care nurse should refer you for one aswel. My chemo started on the 30th Dec and finished on the 24th April. I'm on the other side now and starting to feel like me again. I'm struggling with Menapause symptoms due to the prostap but I can live with that.

im so gutted for you. Lots of stories of younger women getting breast Cancer. Chemo is tough but very do-able.
Stay to the light love Sarah
