Radiotherapy for intermediate DCIS

Hi everyone

I just wanted to ask if anyone has had radiotherapy after having wide local excision for DCIS intermediate  I had my op on the 16th August.

Operation went well results back that the margin is clear im now waiting to speak to radiotherapists about the pros/cons of having radiotherapy as my tumors were small 5mm and caught early.My Surgeon had said if I did opt for radiotherapy it would only be for a week. 

Has anyone else had radiotherapy - how was it - my surgery was on my left breast so is it more dangerous on that side? How long does it take before you speak to the department about therapy starting? 

I would be grateful for any response on this site.

    Hi Lorry1, I am sure someone will come along with some experience of radiotherapy and DCIS. I have had radiotherapy but it was head and a few years ago now so might not even be upto date info from me. 

    anyway I wish you all the best with your treatment and keep us posted on your progress

    Hi,

    just to say I had radiotherapy on my left breast. It used to be considered more dangerous owing to the position of our hearts. However the new radiotherapy machines are very focussed on the cancerous area and don't affect your heart. If the hospital you attend has older machines however you are taught how to breathe in a way that deflects any radiotherapy rays away from your heart. Either way you will be in safe hands. 

    I had 15 sessions over a 3 week period  I had few side affects  but honestly nothing concerning  

    My breast became a little pink but it didn't burn or become sore. I kept moisturising after each session with Nivea. I also drank a lot of water each day. Tiredness is common after this type of treatment but I didn't really get affected by that. One day I did feel very sleepy but it didn't continue. 

    The hardest part was all the driving too and from the appts. (I lived about 15 miles from the hospital) Otherwise it really was quite a simple process.
