Post surgery Issues

Hi some of you will know a little of what is going on with me. I was seen by an oncologist in july for a highly suspected carcinoma of lower eyelid (they think caused by radiotherapy to an optic pathway glioma) Fast forward 5 weeks and a week ago had the tumour removed along with a third of my lower eyelid. Due back with the surgeon on th 9th sept. The stitches have started comming out and the wound has opened. Pictures sent to the urgent eye clinic and they are now seeing me at 9am this Tuesday. The problem is I have started to develop a deep pain in the eye and the area where my existing glioma is and now my calm and rational self has started to feel anxious about infiltration of the carcinoma ( it is currently being sub typed and results were due on the 9th at clinic). I don't have a fever so I dont think localised infection and currently on antibiotic eye gel for the wound. It is more the pain that is causing me issue and is now causing a blip of earache. Logical me is saying that it is probably localised trauma that is causing the eye and glioma pain but it's the niggling thought that the carcinima has infiltrated ( I was told this can happed with carcinoma of the eyelid and they can behave a little differently to other areas of  the body) I guess 4 days is not long to wait to raise my concerns and I probably put this post up to help me be a bit more rational. If anyone has experienced similar deferred post surgical pain i would be interested to know.

thank you in advance

  • Hello Sarah

I'm really sorry to hear that you're having some post -op wound issues. It's good to know that you already have an appointment arranged with the eye clinic on Tuesday.

I just wanted to message you to say don't struggle over the weekend if the pain doesn't improve or gets worse. You can always call NHS 111 for advice and if necessary they can arrange for you to see an out-of-hours clinician. Alternatively don't be worried about going to your local A&E department if you're worried about the wound/pain.

Hopefully, when you see the specialist team on Tuesday they'll be able to give you some reassurance about your concerns. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thnak you Jenn, sort of can't wait for Tuesday to get here so I can get this fixed but on the flipside not wanting to go and face what might happen. I hadn't thought of 111. The Adnexal urgent care closes at 9pm but if problems persist I now have another option. I have had two big nose bleeds since surgery but have a history of heavy bleeds on the same side as the tumours so I think i will make a check list for Tuesday especially as I saw my gP yesterday to discuss referral to a dermatologist ( the carcinoma surgeon asked me to talk to my GP about an urgent referral to check to see if i have any more lesions, he said quite often people have more than one) My GP wouldn't refer me saying that they don't do mole mapping. I will ask the surgeons advise on Tuesday.

    Thank you Jenn
