Having a mastectomy - would like some info on recovery, ie. showering, drains, washing hair, straightening hair, pain etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi
I had masectomy in Dec 2019, so not sure I'm much help as its all a bit hazy. I was a bit nauseous after the op but that was mainly the anaesthetic. Couple of days with drains, a little uncomfortable but given lots of painkillers. Once the drains are removed you're ready to go home and I was very surprised at how quickly I recovered. There was some build up of fluid around the site and I went back to hospital to have it drained. I was given a heart shaped cushion that just fits underarm and that was comforting. If I can remember I was showering normally within a few days as the stitches dissolve. You are given arm and shoulder exercises to do when you get home.
Wishing you all the best

Hi, I had my mastectomy in April this year! I'm 46. I thought I was having a immediate reconstruction but that was not the case! Any who, the operation went well and I was out the same day I had drains in for 3 days, I showered the day after but needed help with some one to hold the drains but I could wash my hair one handed but if I struggled my husband was there to help, after the drains are removed keep up with the exercise they set as it will help massively if you need radiotherapy etc! Stay positive and I wish you well it's a huge thing to go through . Stay strong and don't let this nasty disease drag you down!
