Mastectomy - would it be possible to have double mastectomy?

Hi everyone, I've recently been diagnosed with multi focal breast cancer ( IDC, ER and PR positive) and I will be having a single mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy. I am unable to have an implant due to radiotherapy and I have been offered reconstruction but for a variety of reasons including waiting time and recovery time ( I'm a single mum with a 10 year old) it's not for me. I am really struggling mentally with the thought of having one breast and I wonder if anyone has any experience of successfully arguing for a double mastectomy with no reconstruction as this would be my preferred option. Any help or ideas gratefully received.

  • Hi. I had a mastectomy a year ago and have been vocal about wanting the other breast removed from the start. I've requested an appointment with the breast surgeon via his secretary, my oncologist, breast nurses email and phone calls. Eventually I was sent a letter from the breast surgeon stating that there was no medical reason for me having a mastectomy and if I wanted to take the matter further then do so at another hospital.

The tone of the letter was dreadful and the fact that he refused to even speak with me was devastating. I'm left with a large breast that I despise. I can only wear a hospital insert as the lighter more comfortable options don't go up to my size. Throughout the heatwave I couldn't leave the house because the chaffing from sweating and movement of the insert was unbearable.

I have stage 4 cancer and find myself wishing/ hoping that my remaining breast gets cancer.

I wish you luck. I hope you have a better outcome than me. I know of other people that have had a 2nd op so you should try.
