Basal Cell Carcinoma

For over a year , had a red mark , what looked like a birth mark on my neck , not irritating , not suspicious, with from time to time some 'spots' /bumps that would come and go. Thought it was just maybe a skin irritation but it was just not going away, and kept shape and colour shifting and changing. Saw GP (Practice Nurse) about 14 days ago who said it was 'nothing to worry about' , and that it was 'Keratosis'. A new, pearl like bump appeared and that is when I started Googling !! Did not look good, so arranged a second GP appointment using virtual Doctor/GP service via work health care plan. After showing him photos, within 5 minutes he said I needed a referrral to a Dermatologist. Managed to get an appointment with Nuffield within a week, and this morning diagnosed with suspected BCC, and had surgery.  I am sitting here with a coffee afterwards. Wanted to share my story so far. Stitches come out in one week and test results in two weeks to confirm diagnosis and prognosis.

  • Hi I have just gone through a very similar experience and have my biopsy surgery on friday next week, I was fast tracked to an oncologist by a neuro ophalmologist after my gp said it was nothing to worry about. saw the oncologist and had CT scan and bloods all done on the same visit. she is pretty sure it is a BCC lower right eyelid margin after looking through special lenses etc. I have my follow up appointment with her this Tues for scan and blood results. would it be ok if you were able to keep me updated with your progress as it seems we are on a similar path at the moment.

    Kind regards

    HM

  • Update- +4 weeks - One week after surgery, the stitches came out. Bit of a relief to be honest as I was paranoid trying to not get it infected. Much easier to wash and dry and not snag when they are out. One week after that, I then had my histology results conveyed over the phone , and it was confirmed as BCC but looks like they cut it out cleanly (*always a risk etc ... not 100%, but I'll take that. Now four weeks since surgery and the scar looks good... amazed by how much it has healed. Each day since, any new red mark on my skin raises levels of anxiety and although I always use SPF50 on holiday, will be extra careful form now on.

  • Hi Glsalw, My stitches opened up as it was a tight closure after a third of the eyelid removed. confirmed nodular BCC with clear margin, good news. oncologist called and said it was due to radiotherapy damage and now have to be on the look out for more. like you every lump or bump makes you hyper aware. follow up in 4 weeks. Bloods they did showed my liver function testes were not good and the CT has shown some changes in my optic pathway glioma some hopefully it's nothing too much to worry about
