Thyroid cancer

Hello

6 weeks ago I got a full thyroidectomy. Last Monday I was informed the tumour that was removed was cancerous but the right side of the thyroid wasn't. My voice has been very hoarse and I've had pains in bk of head since.

I had a CT Scan of chest and neck today to see if there is any spread of cancer and should know the result in 2 weeks

I've also been told I will be staying in the cancer hospital for a week for radioiodine therapy..

Have to say I was assigned 2 macmillan nurses who have not given me any advice or anything reassuring.

I  called them both and texted them over a few days...finally got a reply from one saying there is a meeting about me this week and she would call me with the outcome...I'm still waiting!!!!

I'm anxious,  frightened,  tired, sore and a bit lost to be honest.

  • "He pretty much said I'd lose feeling in my ear neck shoulder for life I'd be on vitamin d and calcium tablets for life but reading up I think that's a worse case scenario."

Yup, those are possibilities, not certainties. They will test your calcium levels after the operation to see if they have been effected and even if they are, it's quite likely it will only be a temporary thing.

They go through all the possibilities so that you are prepared for the worst. And those aren't big deals anyway.

And yeah, recovery is different depending on each person and what you need to do. I was joking with colleagues that I'd probably have come back a week earlier apart from one particular class group that I had to be able to turn my head pretty quickly with as whenever I was watching one side of the room, somebody at the other side was up to mischief!

And yup, it's apparently most common in women in their 30s and 40s.

Best of luck with the radioiodince, Lost92. And hopefully you will be able to sing again too. Around your stage, I could speak normally but...realised when I went back to work that I couldn't shout across the yard, so had students running around saying, "Miss says you need to stay away from that" or "Miss says it's time to come in." I'm not exactly sure when it entirely returned to normal as the world shut down two and a bit months after my operation, but it was fine by the time we returned to normal the following summer.

You will presumably have a full body scan after the radioiodine that will tell for sure if it's spread anywhere else, but it is highly unlikely, as only 1%-4% of cases do, I think and of those, I think 80% spread to the lungs, which I assume a chest x-ray would pick up on. The odds of spread to anywhere else is under 1%, I think.

  • Best of luck with the rest or your treatment lost92 hopefully I'll know more once I get the core biopsy done I'm expecting the worse but upto now I've took it on the chin but that maybe because I dunno exactly how my journey with this is gonna pan out as of yet. These threads are great for support especially for those who are going through the same thing.

  • Chances are the more you know the more reassuring the situation will be, to be honest. You really shouldn't expect the worst! The vast majority of the thyroid cancer patients have one of the treatable types, especially younger patients, and as I said before, it rarely spreads outside the neck.

[@MargaretMary]‍ yeah, my voice should be (almost) normal by now but as I was saying my left vocal cord is paralyzed. Honestly my focus in on beating the cancer, I don't mind if my voice never fully comes back or I can never sing again. I had so many long-term plans... I just want my life back, this voice issue does not bother me too much.

Yes, I have a full body scan booked for Friday morning before I get discharged and yes, the x-ray was to check the lungs in particular. I had the surgery done abroad but wanted to do the radio iodine here in the UK. Since sometimes hospitals don't trust each other, they recommended having the CT done here in the UK rather than send in their own reports. They still wanted to have a look at my lungs so they opted for the x-ray, which showed no masses. Do you know how long it takes before you get the results from the full body scan after the radio iodine?

  • I'm in Ireland, so might be different for ye, but I think it was...about two or three weeks? I had the scan at the end of May 2020 and got the results mid-June.

  • The MRI scan was in November and I didn't have my surgery until end of June. So I waited 7 months.

    I.hope you hear something soon..xxx
