Mum has advanced lung cancer. How can I care for her?

My mum has always ignored her health but in jan this year she started suffering with hoarseness and intermittent coughing. Ignored until July 1st when doctor made referrals for CT, ENT and respiratory. Fast forward 1 month and mum is in hospital being told she has Lung cancer which has spread to jaw and also ulcerated tumours in groin. She just wants to come home from hospital but I'm so scared how I can care for her needs, how long she may have left. Hospital is so stretched I cannot grt a straight answer from anyone. I'm fearing she has days and they're hiding it from us.

  • Hello Me2022 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm very sorry to hear about your mum and that you're having trouble getting the information you need from her medical team.

I can't begin to imagine how stressful this must be but I'm glad you've reached out to us as many of our members have found themselves in a similar situation so will know what you're going through at the moment and I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer you their support and advice.

If you'd like to speak with our team of cancer nurses, they're just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help but I hope this information we have on what support is available to you and your mum will prove useful as well.

We're thinking of you Me2022 and wishing you both all the very best at this difficult time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
