Father diagnosed 7 weeks ago with CNS lymphoma

Hi

My 86 yr old dad was suddenly diagnosed nearly two months ago with frontal lobe cerebral lymphoma

We thought he had a stroke

Otherwise prior to this he was fit well and healthy..an avid cyclist.. always out...never been in hospital in his life

He has refused all treatment ie.. chemotherapy and radiotherapy as it would only be palliative

He's on dexamethasone which is causing terrible mood swings and aggression

I've discussed this with the palliative care team and they are reluctant to reduce the dose.  I'm his main carer at the moment as he needs daily support..not carers at present

Also we have had no indication of life expectancy despite asking consultant and neuro oncology specialist

He's frustrated as he now can't be as physical active as he once was and is persistently tired once the steroids wear off.   Anybody experiencing the same thing... feeling like there's a lack of information other than what little I can get from the internet

Sorry for my rant

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Kate-dog although I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

Please don't apologise for ranting. You are going through a lot at the moment and everyone needs a safe space to vent or get their thoughts and feelings out in the open so I hope writing everything down in this post has helped.

It's unfortunate his pallative care team are reluctant to reduce the dose of his dexamethasone. Unfortunately I can't offer any solutions but our cancer nurses may be able to help. If you'd like to discuss this with them, you can call them on 0808 800 4040. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and will do all they can to help and answer any other questions you have at this time.

I hope you hear back from some of our members soon but in the meantime, I just want you to know we're thinking of you at this difficult time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
