Bladder Cancer

I am a 33 female, yesterday I was offcially diagnosed with Stage 3 Bladder Cancer . Transitional cell carcinoma. I don't smoke but I have self catheterised for around 13 years due to a mild Spina Biifa. Currently waiting to get an MRI and CT scan to check if cancer has spread elsewhere in the body. Followed by a 'short course of chemo' and then a removal of the bladder.

I guess my question is would a neo bladder be suitable for me ? I am having trouble picturing life with a stoma so would defintely prefer to explore the neo bladder options. My consultant has advised me to take thing one step at a time and currently to concentrate on starting chemo very soon.

Is there anything I can do or take to help with side effects of chemo ?

Thank you in advance

  • Hello VG2022 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

I am sorry to hear about your recent bladder cancer diagnosis. I hope that you won't need to wait too long for your MRI and CT scan and that you can start treatment soon.

There is information on our website on living with a new bladder and on bladder reconstruction (neo bladder) which I hope you will find useful. I think it's a good idea to follow your consultant's guidance and take one step at a time and to focus on starting chemotherapy very soon. I hope the treatment will go well for you and that you won't suffer any significant side effects. Our general chemotherapy page may be of interest to you too and it contains a section on side effects of chemotherapy. If you have any questions and would like to talk things through, feel free to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of the forum who have opted for bladder removal and recontruction rather than a stoma and I thought I would mention [@Joseland01]‍'s post at the bottom of this thread which mentions this member's husband's decision to opt for the reconstruction rather than the stoma. I also hope that you will get some good tips from other forum members who have had chemotherapy for bladder cancer and who have good suggestions to help deal with chemotherapy side effects.

    Best wishes,
