Wait for thyroid surgery

I found a lump on my thyroid and was referred for biopsy which came back as U3 or 'Indeterminate'. Because I'm having symptoms and because cancer can't be ruled out completely , my consultant has agreed the best route is to have it removed. I was told I would be on the priority 3 list which according to NHS Scotland is a date for surgery booked within 12 weeks which is up next week. I phoned the waiting list today to be told the 12 weeks is wrong and that they are just getting though pre pandemic waiting lists, surely i'll not have to wait over 2 years for surgery on a potentially cancerous lump?! I'm so anxious and really don't know where to turn next... any advice is appreciated

  • Please try not to worry so much. I doubt you will have to wait over two years, but even if you did and even if it was cancer, which it probably isn't, thyroid cancer is very slow-growing. I had it two and a half years ago and honestly, you can see the lump in photos from maybe 5 years before it was diagnosed. And I had my thyroid taken out and am absolutely fine.

Did they tell you two years? The fact that they are still catching up on pre-pandemic waiting lists in itself does not necessarily mean you will have to wait two years.
