Fasting And Diet To Try to Help With Kidney Cancer

Hi, my name is Roger, and I have tumours resulting from a kidney cancer in 2014 (partial nephrectomy in 2014, lymph node removal 2018, lymph node irradiated in 2020, now several enlarged lymph nodes).  The oncologist says that chemo does not work for kidney cancer, and he can only offer immunotherapy;  but because the sub-type of my kidney cancer is in the 5% of unusual sub-types, he sees little chance of benefit, while suffering many quality of life side-effects.

So, I’m trying fasting, combined with a very restricted Ketogenic diet.  It is very demanding;  I am managing to do this because of my level of motivation, and the experience over several years of 36 hour fasts once a week. I have tried and failed to find others' experience of this approach for kidney cancer.

Of course, I won’t know at all whether there is any beneficial effect until I have the next CT scan, and then wait 4 weeks for the oncologist appointment, so I plan to continue if I can until then.  The big downside is too much weight loss, which I cannot reverse sufficiently on the eating days.

If it comes to it I will still accept the immunotherapy, but I would very much like to at least delay the need for this.  And then also try fasting to mitigate the side effects of the treatment.

  • Hello Roger and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

It is really important if you haven't done so already that you talk to your oncologist about this as it is best not to try alternative cancer diets without seeking medical advice and talking to your specialist. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that this works and it could potentially be very harmful so you should not continue with this protocol without discussing it with your oncologist first. Some diets may interact or be damaging so make sure you have that conversation with your oncologist. There is useful information on our website on this subject which you can find on this page.

As it is against our forum terms and conditions to advocate alternative therapies, we are having to lock this thread.

    Best wishes,
