Rectal cancer - new here

Hello, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer following a conoloscopy in April. CT / MRI scans show 'local lymph node involvement'. I had a week of radiotherapy last month and start 4 x 3 week cycles of chemo next Monday. I've been told I'll need a permanent colostomy thereafter. I am finding it harder to cope each day. Just wondering if anyone is going through similar. Best wishes to everyone who finds themselves here. M

  • Hi!

My husband has been diagnosed with it on 31.5. He was told pretty much the same thing as you.

He was first given chemo radiation (27 fractions of radiation and capecitabine tablets to take on radiation days). We have 7 left.

After wards a 6 week break till surgery - with 2 cycles of CapeOx  chemo.

He has a lot of mood swings. Sometimes super positive sometimes dreading the stoma, sometimes believing he won't need surgery then again resigning to it.

We talk as much as possible to help him cope. He reads especially on stoicism , meditate a bit, and he gets super miserable if for whatever reason he doesn't go at least for a walk. That halps him a lot. Try to stay active and engaged.

    Good luck!
