CT scan after MRI?

Hi,

My partner's mum has recently been diagnosed with vulvar cancer. When she got her diagnosis, she was told that they would also be investigating a cyst, as well as whether the vulvar cancer may have spread in the surrounding area (e.g. towards the colon / bowel). Prior to that, an MRI had already been scheduled. The doctor mentioned doing a CT scan during the appointment as well.

The MRI results have just come out and thankfully it is good news, we are very very grateful. They said that the ovaries are OK and they mentioned a fibroid, which presumably refers to the cyst.

I am wondering what the CT scan would be for. I believe that the MRI only covered that one specific area but not checked for spread to other areas, and that would be checked by a separate CT scan - do you think this is correct? Is it common practice?

Thank you very much.
