Colon cancer

My dad has recently been diagnosed with locally advanced colon cancer, they say this is inoperable and their unable to treat him with chemotherapy due to not been strong enough. They have said he has six months and is under a palliative care team,Is perforated his bowl and tracked out. Could any explain this does this mean it's spread or it's spreading ? He has no appetite isn't eating. Is it possible to get him strong enough for chemo with the help of a food supplement through the gp ? Am just lost what to do anything I can do to keep my dad longer any advice would be really appreciated.

  • Hello sajt,

l am sorry to read your post about your Dads condition and will be extremely painful for you to deal with

A tumour in the bowel grows on the inner lining. ln time this will continue. to grow and come through to the outside of the bowel,Cancerous cells will then move through the body using the lymph system to spread to other organs, most common from the bowel would be the liver and other close organs. If the medical team are saying its tracked out l would take this to mean that they can see inflamed lymph nodes  surrounding the tumour at the very least indicating spread and continuing spread,it is highly likely they have been able to confirm this by other means. If they are indicating only pallitive care as the option,it would be unlikely that he could improve sufficiently to allow future chemo to become an option

.l write as someone who had bowel canvcer with subsequent spread to the liver,in my case at no time was l poorly ,sick or ill,and at the time of diagnosis was working as hard as ever,so the concern would be that your dads condition is more advanced and possibly that other health issues are contributing to problems with further treatment.

My advice would be to ring the nurse helpline number shown on this site 0808 800 4040 and speak to a professional who can answer you very specific questions. The other advice is to treat your Dad as normal as possible, but spend more time with him and make sure you get to do and ask all those things you meant to but never quite seemed to get around to.

l am so very sorry that l cannot do more and hope my response does not upset you too much, honesty always comes at a price, but deceit always turns out to be more costly,

                                                                                                          take care,

                                                                                                                              David

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply, I just don't want to believe there's nothing that can be done, am presuming they found the inflammation and that its tracked out by a ct scan he had, he's having some blood test done fbc, liver function and a few others to check platelets ect.

Thank you again for your reply

  • I will also give the nurse a call as I have so many questions, I hope your doing as well as you can.
so frustrating as he's only so ill cause of the cancer and can't eat due to it, we are trying so hard to keep him in high spirits but how do you do that when he's been given this news, I can't imagine how he's feeling knowing there's nothing no one can do.

    thank you so much
