Delays in 2nd mole removal after already having 1b melanoma

HI,

I was diagnosed with 1b melanoma around 8 months ago, this was removed and I also had a sentinal lymoh node biopsy which came back negative which was a relief.

I have recently been to my 2nd 3 month check up and a dark mole has been identififed which looks nothing like my other moles which they are looking to remove and biospy. I also have a new mole which started growing around 2.5 months ago and was pretty itchy, was translucent but has now turned dark, they said they will arrange for this one to be curretted.

Its been 5 weeks since I went for my 2nd check up and I havent received any appointment through, I called the dermatology ward last week who advised that they have a big backlog and they cannot confirm when my appoinment will be other than they may start Saturday and Sunday appointments. I didnt wait anywhere near this length of time last year and was wondering if anyone else is having the same delays? I understand that the NHS have been really stretched but are they only targeted on removing moles within a certain timeframe when you are first diagnosed rather than any future mole removals? Waiting for the results is hard enough but waiting for this appointment when being diagnosed with previous melanoma is burning my head out a bit.

Thanks everyone

  • Hi CLSCRUK,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm glad to hear that things went well after your initial diagnosis, although I can understand this waiting for the appointment must be difficult.

I can only advise calling back to try to get some idea of what to expect. They should be able to give a rough idea of potential waiting time based on their current waiting list. You can also ask your question about future mole removals vs. initial diagnosis.

I hope that things move forward for you soon and that you don't have to wait too much longer. And in the meantime if others here have similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
