New to colorectal cancer

My husband has been diagnosed. We have our firat appointment with the oncologiat tomorrow.

I hope to start treatment asap, whatever it might be.

Staging is yet to be done. We just have biopsy confirmation that it's moderately differentiates adenocarcinoma.

Will update tomorrow.

  • We had MRI today and it showed locally advanced spread. Tomorrow PET scan. Liver and Kidney were clear though.Doctor mentioned it as stage 3 for now. We need to wait till Thursday for a full picture and treatment plan.

  • Hello Lucullan

I'm sorry to hear that your husband has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer. This phase of additional testing and waiting to hear news about the full picture and what treatment will be involved can be difficult. Most people find that once you have that information that things are a little easier.

It's really reassuring to hear that despite some local spread there were no concerns with your husband's liver and kidneys. Hopefully the PET scan tomorrow will bring some more reassuring news and then you'll get his plan on Thursday.

Sometimes it can help to talk things through with someone and I wanted to let you know that if you'd like to chat with our team of nurses ahead of Thursday's appointment you're welcome to call them. I'm sure they will be happy to help with any advice, information, and support that they can as well as help you think about questions that you may want to ask at the appointment. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Lucullan and let us know how things progress this week.

    Best wishes,

  • Fingers crossed for your husband.

Stay strong and take each day at a time.

  • Hi,

I have also just been diagnosed and they have said I am T3 however I am still waiting for results of CT scan to show of any spread. The waiting for results is the worst and although I feel positive part of me is a little scared.

Hope your husband is feeling ok, would like to keep in touch as it seems we are possibly at the same stage depending on the outcome of my CT.

    All the best

    Andrea

  • Yes sure. He is in PET scan now. We will know everything tomorrow.

Hiw old are you if you don't mind me asking. My husband is 49.

  • Hi

I am 46. Hopefully find out results of CT scan this week.

  • Update: PET was clear.

We will start radiation and chemo for 5 weeks, then 6 - 8 weeks break, and then surgery. He will have to get a stoma because the entire rectum and anus have to go due to the involvement of the sphincter.

Another very intense day with so much information that it's impossible to process.

Tomorrow we are going for a second opinion in the morning and then in the afternoon, we will go for planning with radiology and possibly start radiation and chemo on Monday or Tuesday.

  • Hello all,

My darling mother has just had a colonscopy and they found a malignant rectal tumour. I am so frightened for her. Results of biopsy possibly tomorrow. She and my father are not telling us everything, I think, maybe to protect us, but that makes it harder I think. All the best to you all.

  • Today we had planing and measurements for radiation. In between we went for second opinion and my husband chose a hospital he will get treated in.

We start radiation and chemo on Tuesday.

I never thought I will ever  say this but I feel grateful we live in India where things happen really fast and healthcare is amazing.

I don't know what to expect from radiation and chemo (capecitabine tablets) but keeping all crossabels crossed it goes well and shrinks the heck out of the darn tumor.

  • Hi

i had the same thing following a colonoscopy and I have been there and easy for me to say not to worry as I was worried sick waiting for results but please try not to worry.

My thoughts are with you and hopefully a positive outcome for you all
