Oncologist appointment tomorrow. Feeling very nervous.

Had a small t1b removed from my oesophagus in February and told I would need a operation but then more test showed some cells still present so going to see oncologist tomorrow feeling really nervous about this .

  • Dear Kimel,

I really feel for you.  You have been through a lot already. Very best wishes for tomorrow.  You are in good hands, they will do their absolute best for you.  Keep in touch.  I'll be thinking of you...  x

  • So have to say this was the most upsetting appointment yet I found him very abrupt all other Dr's have been friendly but I felt he was just going through the motions .he did say I would have a intense course of chemotherapy over 4 weeks 4 days a week some at my local hospital and some with a bottle at home then hopefully after a scan in for my op he said it would start with in the next 10 days I have a pet scan on Wednesday morning that will be day 9 so not sure if I have to wait for them results or if I will get a call beforehand..

  • Hi Kimel

I'm so sorry to hear that your appointment with the Oncologist left you feeling upset. It's understandably a difficult time for you right now.

We've quite a few members here on the forum who have been through treatment for oesophageal cancer and I wanted to try and connect you with a few of them who have been through the treatment process. I'd suggest having a look at some of the posts in this thread and replying to introduce yourself. I'm also going to tag in [@Hilts]‍ , [@Andi1947]‍ and [@Redski]‍ to my message to you here. Hopefully they will then see your post and may pop along to say Hello and share their experiences with you.

I know that the treatment you have upcoming is daunting and it's natural to feel that you're on an emotional rollercoaster. Sometimes it can help to talk to someone and if you feel at any point you'd like to chat with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Mon-Fri 9 am to 5 pm).

Keep in touch over the coming days and weeks Kimel. Let us know how you're doing. We're here to listen and support.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Oh honey, you have a mountain to climb...  I'm so sorry that the oncologist was so cold, of course that can't help.  We need all the encouragement we can get.  I am already apprehensive myself at the possibility of being obliged to leave my dear plastic surgeon...  However, so long as he's prescribing the best treatment for you, that's all that really matters.  The PET scan will show up anything & everything to give a clear picture to run at.  Go girl!  x

  • Hi,

Sorry your appointment wasn't great - some consultants are awful communicators and cause unnecessary friction. I had a similar experience when first diagnosed several years ago.
    Good luck with the chemo!

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Thank you he said in the next 10 days that was Monday but got a pet scan on Wednesday so I'm guessing I hear after the results of that !

  • Hi Kimel, hope you're OK.

Apologies for my delay in replying, for some reason I didn't get a notification that Moderator Jenn had kindly directed me to your post to help out with questions etc !

Ive been through 4 lots of chemo pre op, had a months break, then surgery (total gastrectomy aka full stomach removal) and then 4 lots of post op chemo to nuke anything microscopic that could've potentially been lurking behind that was too small to be identified in the resolutions scans can go to, or biopsies can get.

Its been a roller coaster from diagnosis in April last year, to the staging tests in May, the chemo in June and July, the surgery at the end of August, the post op chemo in October and November - to getting scanned two weeks before Xmas and getting the all clear.

Ive been through it all, so if you have any questions on treatments, surgery, eating etc - please feel free to ask.

Happy to help however I can.

    Thanks,

    Red.
