Melanoma wide local excision

I had 3 moles removed in March and am going back next week for a wide local excision- one was stage 1A melanoma and the other 2 were melanoma in situ.

Anyone been through this and can let me know how it went please. Feeling anxious and surgery was due last week but had to be postponed so even more nervous now.

  • I had a WLE for melanoma on my scalp.  They could have done it under GA or sedation, but I had local anaesthetic because of my v dodgy chest.  I was worried about the needles, but was told that only the first one would be felt & it would be less than a dental injection.  True.  They were very gentle, kind & unhurried.  It was no problem at all - except getting to a loo afterwards!

Beforehand I reported to a specific pre-op ward.  Had to lie on a (v comfy!) bed, despite my protesting that I could walk, trundled down to theatre by two cheerful nurses,  Even tho' I was having a local, it was full theatre procedure: on the table, draped by sterile sheets + A WARM BLANKET which was v surprising & comforting!  A nice nurse to hold my hand, little bits of friendly chat throughout.  It took just over an hour.

Wheeled into Recovery ward to wait & be checked.  The warm blanket was replaced with another one, v nice!  Back up to the original ward, sandwich & coffee tasted so good...

Good luck sweetheart - keep in touch x

  • Hi I'm Lynn

i was diagnosed the same in March and was diagnosed stage 1a

had my wide excision surgery last week 25th

i totally appreciate what you're saying and going through

please be comforted the next stage is not much different to what you've been through. My leg is very sore but as they take more we hope it will be for the best . The surgeon and surgery was brilliant under the circumstances

I probably am just a step ahead so will keep you informed but trust me it's not as bad as you think and I'm sending my best for you

the doctors on the day will be nothing but super on your next step xx big hugs

  • Thank you for your reply and sure hope I get the warm blanket and comfy bed too.

I hope you are healing well and I will let you know how it goes.

    Take care x

  • Hi Lynn

    Really appreciate your reply.

I was due to have my wle on 26 May but doctor got covid so just hoping it goes ahead next Tuesday.

Were you able to drive home afterwards? I did after the first surgery but just worried as its going to be a longer cut this time in 3 different areas on both legs.

I hope you are healing well and not in too much discomfort.

  • Hi Lynn

Just checking in on how you are doing?

Did they tell you when you will get your results of the WLE? I've been told up to 8 weeks.

I am recovering better this time around thank goodness.

  • Good morning

im not doing too bad thanks, glad you're recovering better

like you it's a bigger version of the initial one plus I had on me on my neck removed , I was slow with moving initially but three weeks on I'm just about getting to normal

canr believe I was called in for my first three month review! Had it really been that long since diagnosed but yes....

it's good they do that , but results from op aren't until 5 july

a bit nervous on that as I'm sure you are, but we're doing as good as we can

I can't fault the hallamshire or calow hospital

just glad we're having things sorted

    have a super day

I will keep my fingers crossed for both our results

    xxx
