Surgery or radiotherapy?

Hi

My husband has just been diagnosed with prostat ecancer Gleason 7 - 3+4

The hospital are guiding him towards prostatectomy but we feel this is the most radical treatment and very final for a  young 60 year old. Lookin at the therapies we'd probably opt for brachytherapy but can't understand why the hospital are so adamant for surgery. What were other people advised please?

  • Hello Georgina.G

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and the dilemma he is facing regarding his treatment.  It's understandable that you both want to make sure that the right decision is made.

We have some information on our website about treatments for prostate cancer but it's difficult to say why the hospital is guiding him toward surgery. They have the full clinical picture and would be best placed to explain why they feel this is the right path for your husband.

However, don't be afraid to question them and ask why other treatments may not be as preferable. If you're not happy with their answers or guidance then you could ask for a second opinion

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and information that they can as well as help you think about some of the points you may want to raise at the next appointment.

Whatever decision your husband makes regarding his treatment, I hope all goes smoothly.

    Best wishes,

  • My husband 55 has similar diagnosis - planned for surgery (and hopeful of cure). Then surgeon requested pre op pmsa scan that showed lymph node involvement so surgery no longer an option. On hormone treatment now with radiation planned. Now hope of 'good remission' .
Different situations but we were all set for surgery, and while radical, cure was mentioned at that time ....

wishing you and hubby the very best
