Testicular Cancer & Fertility

My wonderful husband has just been diagnosed with testicular cancer. He is due for surgery in just over 1 weeks time to remove one testical. His tumour markers were very low so we are keeping positive that it has been caught early. We don't have children but have been actively trying to start a family. I'd really love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar position and how best to support your partner. I know sympathy is not the correct method for him. I love the bones of him and can't even contemplate anything bad happening but he's been researching constantly and it seems to be a cancer that can reoccur.

  • Hello Kat2019

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. It's understandable that you may both be feeling anxious about his upcoming surgery and any other treatment that may be needed.

It's really good to hear that this has been diagnosed at an early stage. The outlook for testicular cancer is one of the best for all cancers. Nearly all men survive their disease. It's natural for people to search online for information following a diagnosis but often this can lead them to outdated or inaccurate information that leaves them feeling even more worried. We have some information on our website about testicular cancer that will hopefully reassure him about survival and recurrence rates. I'm also going to tag in one of our members [@Josh_hereforyou]‍ as a member who has already been through this treatment and diagnosis. Hopefully, he'll pop along to share his story with you soon.

I'm not sure if we've any members who have stories about fertility following treatment for testicular cancer. Hopefully, if anyone sees this post they will respond to you but I wanted to share some information from our website about fertility which will hopefully offer you some reassurance. Do speak to your husband's Consultant or nurse specialist if you've any questions or concerns about this issue.

I also wanted to let you both know that we do have a team of nurses here at Cancer Research Uk that you can call to talk through any concerns or questions that you may have. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they will be happy to offer some information and reassurance to you both.

Undoubtedly this is a difficult time for you both. Keep in touch and let us know how things go over the next few weeks.

    Best wishes,
